Paola Giaconia studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy and graduated with honors in 1996. Recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, she received her Master's Degree in Architecture from SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture) in 1999. In Los Angeles she worked with such architectural offices as RoTo (Michael Rotondi) and mOrphosis (Thom Mayne).

She couples her activity as a designer with scholarly research. She is professor of "Architectural Design" at CalState University (Florence program), visiting professor at Kent State University and at Syracuse University in Florence, and professor assistant in architectural design studios at the Politecnico di Milano.

She contributes to the most important Italian architectural magazines. Her articles and essays have been published in "Abitare", "L'architettura. Cronache e Storia", "ARCH'IT" (she is curator of the section /allestimenti), "Domus", "Ottagono" and "Rassegna".

She is author of the book Los Angeles. Città unica, released by Testo&Immagine in December 2001, and co-editor (with Marco Brizzi) of BEYOND MEDIA 02 and INTIMACY (catalogues of the 6th and 7th International Festival of Architecture in Video of Florence). In October 2003 she curated a significant exhibit held at the Stazione Leopolda in Florence: SPOT ON SCHOOLS saw the participation of 19 among the most distinguished schools of architecture in the world that investigated the ways digital media have informed the conception and production of architecture. The official catalogue of the exhibit, edited by Paola Giaconia, was released by Mandragora, Firenze in October 2003. In December 2005 she curated the second edition of SPOT ON SCHOOLS whose catalogue was released by Compositori, Bologna in the same year. She is the author of a monograph on architect Eric Owen Moss (Eric Owen Moss. The Uncertainty of Doing), published by Skira in 2006.

Recently Paola Giaconia coedited, with Paola Bortolotti and Marco Brizzi, the catalogue for THE TREASURE ISLANDS project, a regional campus for contemporary culture, conceived and organized by iMage, and promoted by the Region of Tuscany, with the objective of encouraging a sensibility for contemporary architectural research in the Tuscan territory. With her recently founded firm iDU, and in collaboration with Id-lab, she was also in charge of the design for THE TREASURE ISLANDS exhibit, which opened in Florence at the SESV gallery on December 5th 2006 and will then travel to a series of Italian Cultural Centers around the world.

She has been lecturing on contemporary architecture and participating at round tables at various cultural institutions and schools of architecture.

Her professional training as a designer in important architectural offices in Italy and in the USA is at the basis of her current activity, which is highly appreciated by her clients and partners.

She is a licensed architect in Italy since 1997 (Ordine Architetti di Milano).
