site: Drancy, France

The site, situated in the southern portion of Drancy, can be perceived as a huge out-of-scale entity, both in its built fabric and in its urban landscape.
The fundamental aim of the project is that of affecting density intended in its 3 meanings: spatial dimension, social dimension and perceptual dimension.
1. Spatial dimension: multi-centrality and new polarities
The project proposes a different balance between the monolithic physicality of the existing buildings, the central void they bound and the city at the margins. The rigid separations between void and full, inside and outside have been negated: the residential blocks have been transformed, carved, pierced... the central void seeps into them, introduces elements of discontinuity, enlivens its spaces.
2. Social dimension: mix, diversity and interaction
The project aims at bringing about new tensions inside the system, thus attempting to enhancing social relationships and interactions. To this purpose, several actions have been undertaken at the scale of the residence, of the city and of the transition spaces between public sphere and the intimate space of the house. The objective is that of creating some sort of interference between these ambits by transforming the residential blocks into true "pieces" of the city.
3. Perceptual dimension: intensity and identity
Breaking up the current separation, bringing a sense of city within the isolated housing estate intensifying its perception, enhancing the relationship between built city and nature: these were the premises in order to develop a new identity for the area. The residential blocks have been turned from an element of separation into sensitive and permeable interfaces which are capable of modulating the relationship between city and nature. The park, which maintains a continuity and coherence with the urban structures, has been identified as the new device devoted, more than any other, to encounter, rest, entertainment. The new system proposes various rhythms and modes for its use; the green element, by seeping into the residential blocks, becomes their common denominator. The park introduces into the built fabric a weakened physical density which thus corresponds to an intensified perceptual density..
