1st prize + commission

The bike-path is part of a compound context characterized by the proximity to dense urban areas, significant infrastructures and a rich and varied natural landscape. Particularly important is the relationship between the main Serio river valley and the side Gavarnia valley.
The project of the new bike-path has two aims: connecting Gavarno and Nembro, thus offering the inhabitants a conscientious alternative to the automobile; requalifying the local water system, in particular the Gavarnia creek. The area of the creek, located on the outskirts of the built portion of the town, will be enhanced by the creation of a sort of ecological corridor that arrives to the banks of the Serio river.
The small Gavarnia valley, thus endowed with a specific (though related to the general ecosystem of the Serio valley) character, will thus become valuable from an environmental point of view. The banks of the Serio river, connected to Nembro and Gavarno by the two new bridges, will become an outdoor facility for leisure time and sports, as well as a diffused museum devoted to the river. The bike-path touches, along its path, a series of specific areas, whose shape, materials and facilities are respectful of the local environmental balance.
All the new design elements are aimed at creating a new landscape system: the continuous flow of the bike-path is a sort of artery that, just like the Gavarnia creek and the Serio river, produces a situation that is controlled from the point of view of the landscape.
The connection with Nembro is the main objective of the new bike-path and it is made possible by getting over the provincial road by means of a suspension bridge: it is like a small aerial piece of architecture, that nevertheless clearly marks the junction of the creek with the Serio river.
A new braced bridge (a pedestrian and bike-path linked to the existing routes) is the means by which passing over the Serio river. The connection between the two banks of the river is strategic from an environmental standpoint. On the side of Gavarno the bike-path generates a series of interventions aimed and requalifying the bank, such as terraces that allow people to get close to the water and enjoy its presence. On the side of Nembro the river lands close the new park. The two banks will thus be part of a single green system that could become an exceptionally significant resource for the whole portion of the Serio valley.
